[自high] A letter for Anthony

所以呢...... 總之為了配合上一篇好不容易寫完的的文章 
這是一封以前寫給Anthony Reynolds的信

HI, Mr. Anthony,

        It's kind of embarrassing to explain why I finally write this mail. I have been a huge fan of Jack/Jacques for years; however, because I live in Taiwan it's difficult to get hold of your releases, leave alone watching your performance. I often buy your CD/7"s via internet and inevitably chase you from UK to Spain, from France to America under different labels.

        I was sorry for the fact you still had to dismiss Jack/Jacques last year, but that's the way life is. It's not easy to clarify why your music enchants me (even by using my mother tongue), but your lyrics about the cruel love stories/realities and true life misery do turn me down when I'm listening, while your charming melody and classical accompanies draw me in like a way back to where I belong. Those 3 or 4-track ep with a hidden song, Lolita ep especially, is the best moment I have with Jack. For Jacques there even seems no composition could disappoint me; a mini album comes from Argentina label called “Faster Than Beauty” often sent me into sleep in the dark, and single “Blue Party” waked me up in countless chilly morning instead. For supporting, I even mail-ordered your poetry from France and the booklet doesn't fail to impress either.

        Nevertheless, I couldn't quite get used to “The end of the way it's always been”, which might reflected the situation you were in and sounds so rough and desperate, your words wear the colour of anxiety, your voices covered by the ashes of integrity. Though they are obviously your works, the album just makes me feel uneasy. Perhaps because of that, knowing you will remain processing your own record project after disbanding is quite a relief to me; however, I wasn't aware of your new releases until glancing at a short article in MCB (Hong Kong) recently.

        Finally I found your website and read some reviews online, almost every critic like “neu york” and think it is divided into two distinct tones; the former part just cheer you up but the latter one gets more deep-down; and again, it's impossible for me to find “neu york” at a local record shop, so I just go straight bidding at eBay and eventually received the CD this week.

        So maybe I should mention why I started writing this mail, it's when I noticed the photographs inside the album booklet and what were pinned up at the wall of perhaps your place (or studio?)……… the portraits of David Sylvian, who is so far the best and maybe the most good-looking singer-songwriter I even known. He took the promo pictures at 80's and did some of the most incredible pieces of work then, and I just can't help imaging if you do admire David Sylvian, it'd be such a fabulous thing to share the same musical interest, which was discovered through a record sleeve, with you.

        Back to “neu york”, I don't think there's such obvious division, instead, the whole atmosphere just makes me feel comfortably familiar. Without any complicated arrangement, simple instruments and catchy synth-sound, accompanied with some former members from Jack, are now the main composites; but the lyrics and tunes are still yours, and in the end, I believe they will continue to be so glamorously cruel and true, like what we've passed through.
